What do our senior citizens owe our children? Should seniors do nice things for their children? Should seniors leave America a better place than they found it? Are any of us responsible for the future?

Are any of us responsible for the future?

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

This Greek Proverb means many things to many people, but what does this Greek adage really mean? Is there a deeper meaning? Does it mean we are to prepare for the future? Perhaps this interpretation leads us to what should happen in America today. Has America lost its way? Are we a great society, or was that just another feel-good political slogan?

A country grew great two hundred and forty-one years ago when our founders planted the mighty shade trees of Constitution, spirit, ownership, entrepreneurship, freedom and liberty for their children’s children to enjoy.

Today, those majestic shade trees are in peril. For the past one hundred years, corrupt politicians and greedy bankers have been slowly, but surely, stripping these protective trees of Constitution, spirit, ownership, entrepreneurship, freedom and liberty. Self-serving ideologues have laid barren the branches of the Constitution and replaced them with the lawlessness of an “anything goes,” “ends justify the means” philosophy that guarantees them power and certain reelection.

The federal government is dysfunctional, ineffective and bloated.  Will you work with me to make America prosperous once more? Will you stand with me to build a bright future for our kids and grandkids?  Will you share Our Vision for America? Visualize a heavy golden chain with more than 320 million links stretching from sea to shining sea. Imagine each link is an American in this 320 million plus link chain. Each link holds our country together. Each citizen in the chain must be a strong, bright, polished link. All must play a vital role to hold this exceptional republic together. Each American is equally important even though each has distinct responsibilities and different roles to play. A chain that must be constantly repaired and strengthened will eventually deteriorate and fail. To have a strong sustainable country for our children and their children everyone must be involved and pull their own weight.

Imagine, in this high tech age of electronics and computers, stuff clogging up the system. Computers eventually become digital junk drawers. To unclog the clutter, one has to reboot, defrag or run disk clean-up to erase corrupted files on the computer. Keep the operating system. It works.

I’ll never forget that sunny Saturday morning, June 7, 1958 when a group of tanned, chiseled candidates stood to take the oath of Officer in the United States Marine Corps. I still remember solemnly swearing with pride to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. That oath was taken with joy in a nation filled with an enthusiastic spirit, full of energy and excitement over the bountiful prospects that lie ahead. I remember Brigadier General Victor Krulak’s address shaping the responsibilities and trust bestowed on us to be “Leaders of Marines.” Think of it. A Leader of Marines. I read the newspaper and I worked for my father. He owned and operated a typography shop and brought home “galleys” to proofread at night. I was the proofreader copy boy at the dinning-room table. Later on, I was the sole proofreader of the “galleys” for a weekly black newspaper called the “St. Louis American.”

No Time to Lose

Do you feel as I do? Are we running out of time? Do you think we are slowly slipping into a “Black Hole” of government corruption, media bias and immorality? We are allowing special interest groups, lobbyists and who knows who, to dictate the course of our republic while our Constitution is shredded and violated every day, week, month and year. 

Yes, we talk about it, complain about it, write about it, and then go about our daily lives with hopes that it’s just a “bad dream” and we will wake up to a bright future. We have to do more than “wake up,” we have to enlighten all citizens that our most precious endowment — “Liberty” — is at stake. I wrote, the Founders declared more than “Independence,” they declared the “American Spirit.”

It’s Those Pesky Emoluments Again

Hardly anyone knows what an emolument is, and few care. It means a salary, fee, or profit from employment, or office. Right there is the truth of the matter, they are calling it something “We the People” aren’t familiar with to make it sound evil and criminal. How could “Swamp Talk” get any worse. Let’s look and see what’s happening around the country. We have heard Obama telling everyone around the world how great he is and how bad Trump is, well about everything. Obama broke tradition by badmouthing ‘Bush 43’ while he was president. Now he is breaking tradition by badmouthing Trump while he is in office. The GOATs love him for it. But then they are enamored by anything low class.
